Additional Course Material
This course will explore the contributions of women artists to the western art tradition from the Middle Ages to the present day. Visual language and art terminology will be used to examine a variety of artworks made by women from a wide assortment of historical, social, political and personal contexts. Because women have been traditionally underrepresented, marginalized and generally discouraged from participating in the visual arts, students will be encouraged to develop and maintain a critical eye during their investigation and to engage in an active questioning of the art historical tradition. In this critical examination, students will gain a general level of knowledge, understanding and appreciation for women's role in art history and will participate in a productive reconsideration of art history.
